(What is JTBD and applying the theory/framework to your project)

Success in product design depends on how satisfied and helpful users are in meeting their needs in using your product.

The more users feel satisfied and helped by your product, the greater your product will perform in the market.

With JTBD or Jobs To Be Done, it can help product designers identify what is really needed and why users use the product.

What is JTBD?
JTBD is a process of observing what users actually need and why they use the product.

As an example:
Hasan needed nails and decided to buy them at the market. Furthermore, the nails are used to display the paintings in his room. What Hasan wants is how the painting can be displayed in his room.

Based on this example, it can be identified that “Hasan doesn’t need nails, what Hasan needs is how the painting can be displayed neatly in his room, no matter whether you have to use nails or attach it using glue or so on”

From that statement, we as product designers understand what Hasan really needs.

One way to apply JTBD is not to ask questions like “What do you want?” to your users.

Try asking “What are you really trying to get done?” or “What is your reason for using the product”?

These questions can identify what our users really need.

Henry Ford said “If I asked people what they wanted, they would want a faster horse”.
